Iota Rho Chapter in Ramona, CA, is proud of our accomplishments for this past calendar year of 2016.
For our community outreach, we made 20 Jared boxes and supported our literary project by collecting and distributing children’s books. One way we did this was by taking them to waiting rooms. We also gave them out to children at our ‘Read Across America’ event we put on with our local Library in March. It was such a fun event! We provided crafts, read Dr. Seuss books to the children, ran a book ‘cake walk’, and passed out Dr. Suess birthday cake to all the children who attended!
We put on fundraisers to raise money for our scholarship fund. This fund provides a grant to deserving senior girls who aspire to become teachers. We also use the fund to support new teachers in our school district. We gave $25 Target gift cards to each of the 29 new teachers who were hired by RUSD this year! Our fundraising activities were a live auction at our Christmas dinner, a silent auction at our Awards dinner in April and a yard sale, also held in April.
In our effort to attract new members, we made 300 goodie bags in August that were passed out to all teachers in the Ramona Unified School District (RUSD) at the beginning of the school year. These bags contained candy, a note welcoming them to the new school year, and our Chapter brochure. This year we better organized our drive to support new teachers by providing a list of new teachers in the district and encouraging members to select a specific teacher to support in whatever way the needed, with volunteer hours, advice, etc.
We’ve done fun and interesting things with our members. At our February meeting we had a speaker, Nancy Weber, who spoke about the Julian Backcountry Quilt Trail. Our May meeting was held at a local winery! At our October meeting, members decorated small pumpkins in a fall motif that lasted through the Thanksgiving holiday. At our November meeting, a local caterer, Kitty Brisendine, showed us how to prepare squash dishes and provided the recipes. Our Holiday dinner and auction, held at a local restaurant in December, was a great success! One of our founding members, Judy Gunnett, made a perfect auctioneer!
Last but not least, we honor our members for the work and support they do throughout the year. In April, we held our annual dinner, where we handed out longevity pins for 5, 10, 15, etc. Officers, committee members and others were honored and acknowledged for their service to our Chapter. We especially thanked, Thalia Henning, our Outstanding Chapter Member for 2016. Past President, Stephanie Hurst was also recognized for being the Area X Outstanding Member.
